Ulle Gorri, commitment to social sustainability

We are committed to the local community by shopping locally and participating in activities that benefit the community. We ask you to support local businesses and restaurants when you visit our guesthouse. We offer local produce for sale in the farmhouse and will provide a list of places where you can shop and enjoy our cuisine.

Commitment to environmental sustainability

As a sustainable accommodation, we have the European Ecolabel from 2019. We have made significant investments to minimise the ecological footprint left by our visitors. The creation of the new Bird Sanctuary Forest will serve as a repository to offset the carbon footprint generated by our guests.

Why is Ulle Gorri Baserria a sustainable accommodation? Here is our decalogue of good practices:

  • Energy:

We promote the use of renewable energy through a 15 kW aerothermal system, complemented by a biomass (wood) boiler.
We have an 8 kW photovoltaic installation on the roof of the farmhouse.
We have an exclusive electric charger for our customers.
We use 100% renewable energy and have efficient LED lighting.

  • Buy Green:

We procure both energy and water efficient equipment.
We offer environmentally friendly products, both food and non-food (paper, body gels and cleaning products).

  • Waste:

We avoid waste generation by using products in dispensers instead of single-dose packs.
We separate waste for recycling, with selective sorting bins in the kitchen for paper, glass, packaging and compost.

  • Water:

We control the water flow in taps and showers to avoid waste.
We capture rainwater in a 7,500 litre tank for drip irrigation in the new Bird Sanctuary Forest.

  • Sustainable Transport:

We encourage the use of public transport and offer walking routes from our farmhouse that do not require the use of a car.

we adopt sustainability practices

Bird Sanctuary Forest

In 2024, we initiated the creation of an edible forest for birds, an agroforestry system that emulates a natural forest and promotes biodiversity, soil regeneration and the fight against climate change. We will plant approximately 200 specimens of trees, shrubs and aromatic plants that will serve as food and shelter for birds and butterflies.

It will also include a pond whose space we hope will be colonised by our herpetofauna (newts, frogs and others).

It will have insect hotels and a feeding area in winter, providing food for the birds to help them through the most difficult times.

We will install nest boxes to help birds nest in safe spaces.

This forest will also be suitable for wellness activities such as forest baths and yoga classes, making it a space of enjoyment for all guests and travellers staying at our farmhouse.

The design of the forest is based on permaculture principles, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda to establish sustainable and regenerative systems.

The objectives of the project are:

  • Create an edible forest that enhances biodiversity.
  • Provide natural habitats for birds, visible from the gîte.
  • Reduce carbon footprint through efficient use of water resources and organic matter.
  • Create a welcoming space to enjoy the natural environment.
  • Facilitate wellness activities such as yoga, mindfulness and forest baths.
